King Billy pine (Athrotaxis selaginoides) burls are highly sought-after by woodworkers for their unique grain patterns, stability, and aromatic scent when workedThese burls, found on the rare, ancient conifer endemic to Tasmania, are prized for crafting musical instruments, furniture, and decorative items.

King Billy pine is a slow-growing, long-lived tree found only in Tasmania’s high country. Its burls, which are rounded, woody outgrowths on the tree trunk, are particularly prized for their unique and often dramatic grain patterns.

Athrotaxis selaginoides is endemic to Tasmania in Australia, where it grows in mountainous areas at 400–1,120 m elevation. Snow frequently falls here in the colder months, though possible all year round. It is often called King Billy pine although it is not a true pine
